There are no credentialed authors on the subject, as far as I know, but everyone is a critic. You'll hear a thousand different opinions on any new design, but most of them are gut reactions, and the rest are lemmings. Are you talking an analysis of classic designs, from a historical perspective, or from an academic perspective? The only example I know of is Vermeule's excellent book, as referenced above. Are you talking about the aesthetics of toning? Here, everyone's a critic.

There are types of toning that tend to garner more at auction, but there is no standard reference, study of toning, analysis of patterns or colors, or any other sort of formal work on the subject. For all we talk about "eye appeal," you would think there would be more authoritative work on the subject, though.

Verified Purchase. Vermeule's landmark work Numismatic Art in America is an outstanding look into the artistic value of American coinage. Vermeule's work is not an overly researched, academic tome about composition and mintage numbers and invisible to the naked eye varieties; rather, this book is a poignant, and sometimes pointed revelation of the visual merit of American numismatics and a mostly balanced criticism of the artists and engravers who produced such works.

At times, reading Vermeule is a bit like reading a hearty Antonin Scalia dissent, but without being a distraction from the underlying subject matter. Simply one of my favorite current numismatic titles.

I strongly disagree with another reviewers comment "Not a coin book filled with history info".
